Performances at All Saints’
Concerts performed by off-campus music groups at All Saints’ continue to be a wonderful part of the All Saints’ music program. In 2007 All Saints’ was the performance venue for a variety of groups, including California Bach Society, San Francisco Concert Chorale, Topaz, and San Francisco Renaissance Voices. We see All Saints’ as a major cultural center for the arts in downtown Palo Alto. At the 10:30 a.m. service of January 20, 2008, the East Bay Singers -- an elite group of over 30 students from California State University, East Bay -- performed three pieces and joined our Chancel Choir in the singing of the service music for the entire service.
We have a wonderful spring concert series -- ranging from Bach to classical guitar to music of the Andes!
The Choir
The adult choir, choir at asaints, org, has presented offerings such as the Duruflé Requiem as the service music at the Eucharist, Poulenc's motet, Tenebrae factae sunt, for Good Friday, and the cantata by Britten, Rejoice in the Lamb. This year, our Children’s Choir sang at the Feast of All Saints’. Our Children’s Choir sang Christmas hymns at our 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Family Service, and our Chancel Choir sang a choral prelude set of music including excerpts from the famous Vivaldi Gloria (RV 589) at our 10:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Solemn Eucharist. Our music director Rodney Gehrke has arrived. If you're interested in learning more or perhaps joining our choir, email Mr. Gehrke at music at asaints, org.
Topaz
Mimi Dye and TOPAZ presented "Sacred Sounds", a celebration of sacred music on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 4pm at All Saints' Church. Rodney Gehrke, All Saints' new music director and organist, and Jimmy Kansau, tenor soloist, joined Mimi Dye, violist, for this beautiful and meditative concert. Sacred music by St. Hildegard of Bingen, Vaughan Willliams, Bach, Britten and traditional Norwegian Hardenger fiddle tunes were featured.Tickets are tax-deductible and include an elegant reception: $30 at the door, $25 in advance. Proceeds benefit the TOPAZ organization. http://www.topazmusic.org
The TOPAZ committee was formed in the spring of 2006 and includes members and non-members of All Saints. TOPAZ has become more multi-cultural in our programming, including musicians and performing organizations from the Persian, Filipino, Venezuelan and Chinese communities.
The Pew Players
All Saints’ has a vibrant arts ministry which includes the Pew Players, an amateur theatrical group which puts on occasional productions for the community in our Parish Hall.Since 1980, the Pew Players have staged liturgical dramas, medieval Mystery plays, and original works; in 2006, the group presented Michael Green’s farce, “All’s Well That Ends As You Like It,” (pictured).
Art Exhibits
Our Parish Hall often has wonderful art exhibits and is available for showings by local artists. We recently had a showing from one of our parishioners, John Cadigan. We also had a local artist exhibiting in our sanctuary during Pentecost. Interested in showing your art? Contact the office at office at asaints, org.We Love Music At All Saints’!
During worship you'll experience the heartfelt hymn singing of
our congregation; choral music in a wide variety of periods
and styles; original compositions of our music director;
the use of Anglican chant for the psalter; and sung
Eucharist Prayers by our clergy.
The outward and visible signs of our dedication to
worship through music are strong: the beautiful
acoustics of our round sanctuary; our splendid
adult choir; our magnificent, historic and newly
refurbished D.A. Flentrop organ; our decades
long dedication as a downtown performance
space for the the California Bach Society, the
Ragazzi Boys Choir, our own Pew Players,
Magnificat early music events, and the Topaz
ensemble. If you would like to perform here at

» New Esterhazy Quartet Returns February 7 at 4:00 p.m.
On Sunday, February 7, at 4:00 p.m., the quartet returns to All Saints'.San Francisco’s New Esterházy Quartet, founded in 2006, have recently completed an historic series of concerts — for the first time ever in America, the complete cycle of Haydn's string quartets was performed on period instruments. Their February concerts add a pendant to this chain of 18 concerts: there is still much music for string quartet by or relating to Haydn yet to be explored. In a concert entitled “Extras & Encores” the New Esterházy Quartet plays music written by Haydn, arranged by Haydn, arranged from Haydn’s works by his students and admirers, as well as pieces composed by his predecessor, his brother, and his students.
